If you were born before 6th March 1957, you are a Ghanaian citizen if:

• You were born in Ghana, and at least one of your parents or grandparents was born in Ghana.
• You were born outside Ghana, and one of your parents was born in Ghana.

If you were born between 6th March 1957 and 22nd August 1969, you are a Ghanaian citizen:

• You were born in or outside Ghana, and either of your parents, or at least one grandparent or great-grandparent, was born in Ghana.
• In the case where neither parent was born in Ghana, at least one grandparent was born in Ghana.
• You were born in Ghana, and at the time of your birth, either of your parents was a citizen of Ghana by registration or naturalization.

If you born between 23rd August 1969 and 6th January, 1993 you are considered a citizen of Ghana

If you were born in Ghana, you are a citizen by birth if at least one of your parents or grandparents was a citizen of Ghana at the time of your birth.
If you were born outside Ghana, you are a citizen by birth if either of your parents was a citizen of Ghana at the time of your birth.

Additionally, the general provisions apply:

• If at the time of your birth, the parent or grandparent through whom you claim citizenship had lost their Ghanaian citizenship, you would not be considered a citizen of Ghana.
• You can also acquire citizenship if, at the time of your birth, either parent was a citizen of Ghana by registration or naturalization.

If you were born after 7th January 1993, you are a Ghanaian citizen if:

• You were born in or outside Ghana, and either of your parents or one grandparent was a citizen of Ghana.
If you are a child under 16 years old and have been adopted by a Ghanaian citizen, you automatically become a Ghanaian citizen by virtue of the adoption.

Adults and children can apply for citizenship by registration under the following circumstances:

You can apply if you are:
• A citizen of an approved country.
• Ordinarily resident in Ghana for at least five years before the application.
• Of good character.
• Capable of speaking and understanding an indigenous Ghanaian language.

Spouses of Ghanaian citizens can apply for registration as citizens. The process requires:

• Proof of marriage to a Ghanaian citizen.
• Meeting the residency and character requirements.

Naturalization is available to those who meet specific residency and character requirements:

• Resided in Ghana for at least seven years immediately before the application.
• Good character.
• Ability to speak and understand an indigenous Ghanaian language.
• An intention to reside permanently in Ghana.

Ghana allows dual citizenship, meaning you can hold citizenship of Ghana and another country simultaneously.

To register as a dual national:

Persons of African descent in the Diaspora or those who lost their Ghanaian citizenship due to acquiring another nationality can apply for the right of abode in Ghana. This grants them the right to live and work in Ghana indefinitely.
